Selected As The “Number 1” Place To Live In Massachusetts by Boston Magazine
Marblehead is a picturesque
seacoast town rich in history.
From the early 1600’s through the 1700’s, seafaring
and fishing were the main sources of income.
In the 1800’s, the shoe industry was the main employer;
until, on two different occasions, fires destroyed the mid
section of the town where the factories were located.
Today Marblehead is mostly a residential
community with some minor industry, and a number of unique
retail shops and businesses.
While Marblehead has been known
through the years as the “Birthplace of the American Navy,”
in recent times, the town has also become known as one of
the “yachting capitals of the world.”
Competitive sailing and pleasure boating are popular
pastimes from May through October.
Guests come from all over the world to view the original of the famous
painting, “The Spirit of ’76,” housed in historic Abbot Hall. As well, they come to see nature’s work in the
beauty of Marblehead Harbor, and its abundance
of all types of boats. Other major attractions are the extremely
narrow, crooked streets in the “Old Town,” Historic District.
That area is lined with old Colonial, Federal, Georgian,
and Victorian buildings, shops, and homes; a number of which
have been placed on the National Register.
Marblehead offers residents and visitors alike a series of events
throughout the year including:
a week long arts festival, regatta and race week, open
air and indoor music concerts, an active theater organization,
“The Great Picnic,” and a “Christmas walk” weekend.
Civic groups, associations, clubs, and youth athletic
programs abound, and, very importantly, Marblehead has a superior
school system with new High and Junior High schools.
In sum, Marblehead is a great place to call home! Its location on the Atlantic Coast, beautiful
harbor, sense of history and community, and close proximity
to Logan International Airport, Boston, Cape Cod, and the
mountains have earned it an international reputation.
